Is OANDA a good broker?
OANDA is a well-regulated broker with no minimum deposit and five platform choices. Its main limit for readers in Africa, Asia and Latin America is that the facts we verified describe the UK entity, so you must check what is offered in your own country.
These facts come from OANDA's own website, checked on 16 October 2026:
- Regulation: FCA licence 542574, held by OANDA Europe Limited.
- Minimum deposit: none for OANDA Europe Limited in the UK.
- Spreads: from 0.6 pips on EUR/USD (UK).
- Platforms: OANDA web, OANDA mobile, MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and TradingView.
- Deposit methods: debit card, credit card and bank transfer (Faster Payments, CHAPS, BACS, SWIFT and SEPA).
- Risk figure: 76.6% of retail CFD accounts lose money, according to OANDA.
What we could not confirm: the maximum leverage, any trading commission, a list of withdrawal methods, a withdrawal time and whether OANDA accepts clients from your country. We do not guess these. This review tells you what to check.
A CFD (contract for difference) lets you speculate on a price going up or down without owning the asset. It is high risk.
Best for: traders who want a strongly regulated broker.

01Is OANDA legit and safe?
Yes. OANDA Europe Limited is authorised by the UK's Financial Conduct Authority, which is one of the better-known regulators in the world. But that licence covers the UK company, so you must confirm which OANDA company can serve you.
A regulator is a public body that licenses financial firms and checks that they follow rules. A broker group often has one company per region. The rules, the protections and the complaint routes depend on which company holds your account.
FCA licence (OANDA Europe Limited)
The FCA is the Financial Conduct Authority of the United Kingdom. OANDA Europe Limited appears with FCA number 542574. UK rules for retail clients are strict. They include limits on leverage, a required risk warning with the share of clients who lose, and routes for complaints.
The figures in our facts, such as the zero minimum deposit and the 0.6 pip spread, are marked as applying to the UK. We did not verify the terms of any other OANDA company. If you live outside the UK, the company that serves you may offer different spreads, different protections and different rules. That is why the first step is to ask.
How to check the FCA licence yourself:
- Open the FCA Financial Services Register on the FCA website.
- Search for the number 542574.
- Check that the company name is OANDA Europe Limited and that its status is authorised.
- Look at the website addresses listed. They should match the site you are using.
- Look at the permissions. Trading CFDs for retail clients should be listed.
- Save a screenshot.
What to ask OANDA in writing before you deposit:
- Which company will hold my account, and in which country is it based?
- Which regulator supervises that company and what is its licence number?
- Do you accept clients from my country?
- What protections apply to my money?
The 76.6% figure. OANDA states that 76.6% of its retail CFD accounts lose money. That is more than three out of four. Regulation does not protect you from losing on a trade. It protects against some kinds of broker misconduct.
02OANDA fees and spreads explained
OANDA shows spreads from 0.6 pips on EUR/USD for UK clients. We did not find a published commission figure, so the spread is the main cost we can verify.
Let us explain the words first.
- Pip: the smallest standard price step in most currency pairs. For EUR/USD it is the fourth decimal place.
- Spread: the difference between the buy price and the sell price. You pay it each time you open a trade.
- Commission: a fixed fee charged per trade. We could not confirm whether OANDA charges one on your account type.
- Swap: a fee or credit for holding a trade overnight.
- Slippage: when your trade fills at a slightly different price from the one you saw.
What 0.6 pips means. A spread of 0.6 pips on EUR/USD is low for a standard account. But "from" means the lowest case, for the UK, on one pair. Spreads widen when markets are quiet, when news arrives and at the market open on Monday. They also differ between pairs. Exotic pairs and some commodities cost more.
Compare with a real test.
- Open a demo account on the platform you will use.
- Watch the live spread on EUR/USD and on two or three other pairs.
- Check at different hours, including during a news event.
- Write the numbers down.
Costs we did not verify. We did not find verified figures for swap rates, inactivity fees, withdrawal fees or currency conversion on funding. Those can matter, especially if your bank currency is different from your account currency. Look for them on OANDA's fee pages for your entity.
Total cost. The cost of a trade is the spread, plus any commission, plus swap if you hold overnight. Add them for one typical trade and compare brokers on that total, not on a headline.
03Account types at OANDA
We could not confirm a full list of OANDA account types from the facts we checked. What we can say is that OANDA supports five platform routes and a zero minimum for its UK entity.
Rather than invent a table, here is how to read an account page at any broker.
- Which entity is it for? The same brand can have different accounts for the UK, Europe and other regions.
- How is the cost charged? Spread only, or spread plus commission.
- Which platforms can I use? For OANDA these include its own web and mobile platforms, MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and TradingView.
- What leverage applies? UK retail clients have limits. We did not verify a figure, so check yours.
- Which instruments are included? Forex pairs, indices, metals and others may differ between entities.
Demo account. A demo account lets you practise with virtual money at live prices. It is free. Use it long enough to learn how to place orders, set a stop-loss (an order that closes your trade at a loss level you choose) and read your trade history.
Choosing your platform first. At OANDA the platform may decide how your account works. If you want TradingView charts, check that your account type supports TradingView. If you want MetaTrader, check that it is available for your entity. Ask support, in writing, if the page is not clear.
Account currency. Choose a currency that matches how you will fund the account, to avoid extra conversion costs.
04Minimum deposit: how much do you need to start?
OANDA Europe Limited has no minimum deposit in the UK. That means you can start with any amount that the payment method allows. It does not mean you should start with a large amount.
A zero minimum is flexible, but it is easy to misread. It means the broker does not demand a set amount. It does not mean small deposits are free. Your card provider or bank may still charge a fee. Some payment methods have their own lowest amounts.
How much should a beginner deposit?
- Only money you can afford to lose completely.
- An amount that lets you trade very small sizes, risking about 1% of the balance on each trade.
- Not rent money, school money or borrowed money.
- Not your whole savings. Keep an emergency fund outside the broker.
A smart first step. Start with a small amount, place a small trade with a stop-loss, and then ask for a small withdrawal. If everything works, you can decide whether to add more.
For readers outside the UK. The no-minimum statement is for OANDA Europe Limited in the UK. Another OANDA company may set a different minimum. Check the number you see when you register.
05Deposit and withdrawal methods
OANDA lists debit card, credit card and bank transfer for deposits, including Faster Payments, CHAPS, BACS, SWIFT and SEPA. We could not confirm a list of withdrawal methods.
Here is what those bank transfer names mean:
- Faster Payments, CHAPS and BACS: payment systems in the United Kingdom.
- SEPA: a payment system for euro transfers inside Europe.
- SWIFT: an international bank-to-bank network. Traders outside the UK and Europe often use SWIFT.
The facts we checked list no e-wallets and no crypto. For many traders in Africa, Asia and Latin America, that matters. If your local payment methods are not on the list, funding may be harder. Check which methods are open to you before you decide.
Cards and banks can add costs. International card payments and SWIFT transfers can include fees from your bank or from intermediary banks. Currency conversion may also take a margin. We did not find these in OANDA's verified facts, so ask your own bank what it will charge.
Withdrawals. We could not confirm withdrawal methods. In the industry, brokers often send money back to the source of the deposit. This is an anti-money-laundering rule. We have not verified OANDA's exact policy. Ask support.
Safe payment habits:
- Pay only from accounts in your own name.
- Finish identity verification before you need to withdraw.
- Keep copies of every receipt.
- Use only the official client area. Do not send money to people who message you.
- Check your card or bank limits for international payments.
06How long do OANDA withdrawals take?
We could not confirm a stated OANDA withdrawal time, so we do not quote one. You should test it yourself with a small amount.
OANDA's verified facts do not give a processing time. In general, the time has two parts:
- Broker processing: how long OANDA takes to review and approve the request.
- Bank or card time: how long your bank takes to show the money. A SWIFT transfer across borders can take longer than a local one.
How to test it:
- Deposit a small amount.
- Make a tiny trade or just leave the money.
- Request a small withdrawal to the same route.
- Write down the date and time of the request.
- Write down when the money lands.
- Repeat later with a larger amount.
Why delays happen. Verification not finished, a name mismatch between your account and your bank, an open position using your money as margin, or a bank holiday. Plan ahead and many of these vanish.
If your withdrawal is stuck. Contact support in writing and ask for a clear reason. Keep the ticket number. If that does not help, use the complaint route of the regulator for your OANDA entity. For the UK entity, the FCA website explains how to complain.
07Trading platforms
OANDA offers OANDA web, OANDA mobile, MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5 and TradingView.
- OANDA web: the broker's own platform in a browser. No installation is needed.
- OANDA mobile: the phone app for trading and for managing your account.
- MetaTrader 4 (MT4): a simple, popular forex platform that supports automatic trading programs called expert advisors.
- MetaTrader 5 (MT5): the newer version with more order types and more markets.
- TradingView: a charting platform known for clean charts, drawing features and a large community. OANDA lists it as a trading option.
How to choose. If you like clean charts, TradingView is a good place to start. If you follow a course that uses MetaTrader, use MetaTrader. If you want the simplest route, use OANDA web and the mobile app.
Practise first. Whichever platform you choose, try it on a demo account. Place a market order, a pending order, move a stop-loss and close a trade.
Phone safety. Use a screen lock and two-step login. Do not trade on public Wi-Fi without a protected connection. Check the lot size every time you press the button.
08Leverage and risk
We could not confirm OANDA's maximum leverage from the facts we checked. UK retail clients face leverage limits, so the figure depends on your entity and your client type.
Leverage lets you control a larger position with a small deposit. At 1:10, each $1 controls $10. A small price move can create a large profit or a large loss. It multiplies both.
Why the missing number matters. A broker that offers very high leverage can seem attractive but is risky. A broker with lower limits protects beginners from over-trading. Ask OANDA for the exact limit for your account and the rules about margin.
Risk words you should know:
- Margin: the money held to keep your trade open.
- Margin call: a warning that your free margin is low.
- Stop-out: the level where the broker closes your trades automatically.
- Negative balance protection: a rule that stops you from losing more than you deposited. We did not verify whether it applies to your OANDA entity, so ask.
The risk figure. OANDA says 76.6% of its retail CFD accounts lose money. Take that number seriously. It tells you that most clients lose, and that trading is not a safe way to earn income.
Rules to protect yourself:
- Always use a stop-loss.
- Risk a small part of the balance on each trade.
- Do not add money to chase back a loss.
- Avoid trading during big news if you are a beginner.
- Stop for the day if you reach your loss limit.
09Who is OANDA best for?
OANDA fits traders who value strong regulation, a zero minimum deposit, tight published spreads on EUR/USD and platform choice. It is less suited to anyone who needs wallet or crypto funding.
OANDA could be a good match if you:
- want a broker regulated by the FCA;
- prefer to start with any amount you choose;
- like TradingView or MetaTrader as well as the broker's own platform;
- can fund the account by card or bank transfer, including SWIFT;
- will test everything on a demo first.
Think carefully if you:
- need e-wallet or crypto funding, which we did not find in the verified methods;
- live in a country that OANDA may not serve. Confirm this before you sign up;
- need a stated withdrawal time or a maximum leverage figure before you start;
- cannot afford to lose the money you deposit.
For beginners. A regulated broker with no minimum and a demo account is a gentle start. The 76.6% loss figure is still a warning.
For experienced traders. The mix of platforms, including TradingView and MetaTrader, is useful. Check spreads and costs on your own instruments.
10How to open an OANDA account
- Go to the official website, oanda.com, by typing the address yourself. Do not click links in messages from strangers.
- Check your country. Make sure OANDA can serve clients where you live, and ask which company will hold your account.
- Register with your email, and set a strong password.
- Complete your profile. Expect questions about your experience, income and trading knowledge. Answer honestly.
- Upload identity documents. A photo ID and a proof of address are normal. Do this early.
- Open a demo account and practise on your chosen platform.
- Open a live account when you have a written plan.
- Fund the account by card or bank transfer from an account in your own name.
- Place a tiny trade with a stop-loss.
- Test a small withdrawal before you add more money.
Steps can change. Follow what the official site shows.
11The fine print
Read the client agreement and the risk warning. These are the points most readers miss.
- The facts are for the UK entity. The 0.6 pip spread and the zero minimum are marked for the UK. Other entities may differ.
- "From 0.6 pips" is the best case on EUR/USD, not a promise on every pair or every moment.
- Funding choices are limited in the facts we verified: cards and bank transfers.
- We did not verify the maximum leverage, any commission, swap rates, inactivity fees, withdrawal fees or withdrawal times.
- Card and bank fees may be charged by your own bank, even when the broker charges nothing.
- Loss rate. 76.6% of retail CFD accounts lose money.
- Impersonators. Scammers copy well-known brands on messaging apps. OANDA will not ask you to send money to a private person.
Complaints. Start with support, in writing. If unresolved, look for the process of the regulator for your entity.
Our checks. We read OANDA's official pages on 16 October 2026. If you find a difference, tell us.
12Our final verdict
OANDA is a strongly regulated broker with no minimum deposit and good platform choice. It is a good option for a careful trader who can fund by card or bank transfer and who confirms that OANDA serves their country. Remember that most retail accounts lose money.
What we like: an FCA licence (542574), no minimum deposit for the UK entity, spreads from 0.6 pips on EUR/USD and five platform options, including TradingView and MetaTrader.
What we do not like: a 76.6% loss rate for retail CFD accounts, funding limited to cards and bank transfers in the verified list, and no confirmed leverage, commission or withdrawal time.
Our advice: confirm the entity, practise on a demo, deposit a small amount, test a withdrawal and keep trades small.
Trading CFDs is risky and you can lose all the money you put in. This review is information, not financial advice.
